Time: 8:00 PM

image

Combining hip-hop, rock, reggae, and funk, and spiced with Middle Eastern flavor, Hadag Nahash’s distinct sound has brought the band international fame. Booming out of Jerusalem in 1996, Hadag Nahash has become Israel’s leading hip-hop band and is set to embark on their sixth tour across North America. The band has been frequently compared to The Roots and has shared the stage with such global sensations as The Black Eyed Peas, Cypress Hill, and The Streets. They also recently contributed multiple songs to the soundtrack of Adam Sandler’s film, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan. The chart-topping and award-winning Israeli group returns to Sixth & I for another unforgettable performance under the dome.

Time: 7:00 PM

More than a quarter century ago, at the age of 25, Ted Leonsis - now the owner of the Washington Capitals - was already a highly successful entrepreneur, but reflecting on his life after surviving a plane crash, he realized that he wasn't truly happy. Walking away from that plane crash, Leonsis was determined to discover the secret to happiness.

Using the same analytical skills that had brought him great business success, he began to study happiness in fellow business executives, successful entertainers, and professional athletes, as well as typical Americans.

Title: A River Wild: Young Adults Fighting the Upstream Battle Against Cancer
Film Screening and Panel Discussion
Date: Thursday, February 18, 2010
Time: 7:00 PM
image

Despite popular opinion, young adults can and do get cancer. Those affected by cancer in their teens, twenties, and thirties are an often overlooked and orphaned generation who need support and community to live meaningfully through their battle with and survivorship from the disease.

The short film, A River Wild, tells the story of four young adults battling cancer who spent seven days kayaking the Colorado in order to prove that cancer, no matter how aggressive, dormant, or advanced, would never be stronger than they were. Join us in support of the young adult cancer awareness movement.

Following the film, special guests, Brad Ludden (Founder, First Descents), Jack Bouffard (Founder, i[2]y), and Tamika Felder (Founder, Tamika & Friends), will discuss and answer questions about the film and movement.

About the organizations:
First Descents is committed to curing young adults of the emotional effects of cancer and empowering them through adventure sports in a supportive environment.
i[2]y, the I'm Too Young For This! Cancer Foundation, is the nation's leading grassroots advocate for the next generation of cancer survivors and their caregivers in their late teens, 20s, and 30s.
Tamika & Friends, founded by cervical cancer survivor Tamika Felder, raises awareness about cervical cancer and its link to HPV.

Title: All in the Family: Writing as a Showalter
Date: Wednesday, February 03, 2010
Time: 7:00 PM
image
Here’s an event to prove that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. On the occasion of the paperback release of Elaine Showalter's tenth book, A Jury of Her Peers: Celebrating American Women Writers from Anne Bradstreet to Annie Proulx, the three very different writers in the Showalter family will get together to talk about how they became writers and how being part of this family influenced their work.

Mom Elaine Showalter is professor emeritus of English at Princeton University, and a journalist who has written for People, Vogue, The Guardian, and The Washington Post.
Daughter Vinca Showalter LaFleur is a former speechwriter for President Clinton, a partner in the Washington firm West Wing Writers, and an international speechwriter and ghostwriter.
Son Michael Showalter is a comedian, screenwriter, and comedy writer, whose series Michael and Michael Have Issues just finished its first season on Comedy Central. This will be Michael’s fourth appearance at Sixth & I, but the first anywhere with his mother.

Title: It’s Only Natural: A Tu B’Shvat Celebration
Date: Thursday, January 28, 2010
Time: 7:00 PM

image

Embrace your inner environmentalist by joining us for a Tu B’Shvat celebration. Dine and drink your way through a traditional seder as we sprinkle in tasty Kabbalistic tidbits and nature-inspired yoga poses. Tu B’Shvat; its more than just trees.

Tu B’Shvat, traditionally known as the birthday of the trees, is a time to think about relating to the natural world. This holiday can be celebrated by planting trees, eating fruits, and having a Tu B'Shvat seder, a ritual that began with the Kabbalists of the 15th century. At our seder, we’ll enjoy some new and exotic fruits, discuss issues of sustainability, and discover connections between environmentalism and Judaism.

This seder is supported in part by the family of Ida Yolken Abramowitz in honor of her yahrzeit, and their generosity allows us to offer a delicious dinner.

Title: MLK Shabbat: Visions of Justice and Freedom
Date: Friday, January 15, 2010
Time: 7:30 PM

image

Sixth & I and Turner Memorial AME Church will join together to commemorate the spirit and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel for the sixth annual MLK Shabbat service.

In addition to a traditional Shabbat service, the evening will include inspirational readings, song and dance by the Turner Memorial Gospel Choir and Agape Liturgical Dancers, and a keynote address by Professor Peter Edelman. A dessert reception will follow the service.

As a way of capturing the essence of Rabbi Heschel’s phrase, “praying with my legs,” a statement he made when asked what it was like to march with Dr. King in Selma, Alabama, we are holding a shoe drive.

WAMU 88.5 is the official radio sponsor of this event.

Title: Elizabeth Gilbert
Date: Thursday, January 07, 2010
Time: 7:00 PM

Elizabeth Gilbert, the best-selling author of Eat, Pray, Love, examines questions of compatibility, infatuation, fidelity, family tradition, social expectations, and divorce risks in her new memoir, Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage.

At the end of Eat, Pray, Love, Gilbert fell in love with Felipe, a Brazilian-born man of Australian citizenship who'd been living in Indonesia when they met. Resettling in America, the couple swore eternal fidelity to each other, but also swore to never, under any circumstances, get legally married. (Both were survivors of previous horrific divorces.) But providence intervened one day in the form of the U.S. government, which after unexpectedly detaining Felipe at the America border crossing, gave the couple a choice: they could either get married, or Felipe would never be allowed to enter the country.

Title: The Enemy I Knew: German Jews in the Allied Military in World War II
Date: Thursday, December 10, 2009
Time: 7:00 PM
image In the decades since World War II, one question has arisen again and again: “Why didn’t the Jews fight back?” In The Enemy I Knew, author Steven Karras shows that not only did they fight back, many Jews also played key roles in bringing an end to the Nazis’ reign of terror.

Helping dispel the myth that the Jewish experience leading up to and during World War II was one solely of victimization, The Enemy I Knew contains twenty-seven, first-person narratives of courageous German and Austrian born Jews who fled the Nazis and, not long after finding safety in the U.S. and Great Britain, were inducted into the Allied Armed Forces to fight the countries of their birth. The Enemy I Knew is a tribute to the often overlooked men and women who risked everything to serve their new countries and help rid the world of an unparalleled human evil.
