Designed by architect Louis Levi, whose works
also include synagogues in Philadelphia and his
native Baltimore, the building combines several
traditional styles of architecture - Moorish,
Romanesque, and Byzantine - that were popular
at the turn of the century.
The light gray vitrified brick building is accented
with terra cotta trimmings. Sixth & I has been called
an outstanding example of early twentieth century American synagogue architecture.
At right: The north wall of the building shows
the brickwork and some of the decorative
carvings.
