SUMMARY:Exploring Race\, History\, and Community: An Interactive Discussion
DESCRIPTION:As the third and final program in the Edlavitch DCJCC’s Race\, History\, and Community: A Series Focusing on Race and Justice in America\, Sixth & I hosts a guided discussion and exploration of Between the World and Me\, by Ta-Nehisi Coates\, a MacArthur “genius” grant winner and national correspondent at The Atlantic. Written as a letter from Coates to his 15 year old son\, the book provides an unflinching portrait of the reality of being a black man in the U.S. today. \nFacilitated by Suzanne Feinspan\, this workshop will explore the book’s major themes\, how we connect with it individually\, and how we might connect with it as Jews. Come whether you’ve read the entire book\, a chapter\, or just a page. All are welcome to participate in this conversation but the workshop is primarily designed as an exploration of these concepts for those who identify as white. \nA light vegetarian dinner will be served. \nSuzanne Feinspan is an experienced trainer on racial justice within Jewish contexts\, having specialized in this area for over a decade. She has written extensively on issues of racial justice\, poverty and service learning and has written for the Jewish Telegraphic Agency\, Zeek\, Kveller\, eJewishPhilanthropy\, and Raising Race Conscious Children.
