SUMMARY:Next Level: Antisemitism
DESCRIPTION:This series meets on Mondays\, April 10\, 17\, 24\, and May 1 from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm. \nWhat are we talking about when we talk about antisemitism? Though it’s become increasingly visible\, discussing antisemitism can feel fraught and overwhelming\, opening up big questions related to Jewish identity\, history\, and discrimination in the past and in the present. \nOver four classes led by Rabbi Nora\, explore different facets of this difficult and fascinating concept and gain context and resources to help you grapple with manifestations of antisemitism moving forward. While the conversations will be grounded in learning and curiosity\, this class is not designed as a training for how to respond to or fight antisemitism or a processing space for personal experiences of antisemitism. \nCome with an open mind and be prepared to do a little pre-reading or listening before class. \nClass 1: What is Antisemitism?\nMonday\, April 10 \nTrace the history of antisemitism and dive into definitions of antisemitism. Come ready to uncover the roots of this term\, explore misconceptions\, and examine diverging opinions on the subject. \nClass 2: Tropes and Stereotypes\nMonday\, April 17 \nReview various manifestations of antisemitism through the last few centuries. Unpack common images and narratives about Jews as they’ve emerged around the world and delve into the role of antisemitism in the history of the Holocaust and development of Nazism. \nClass 3: Antisemitism in the U.S.\nMonday\, April 24 \nThis class focuses specifically on the American setting and episodes\, waves\, and patterns of antisemitism in the U.S. Discuss the role of politics\, polarization\, and power as they relate to the perception and positions of Jews in the U.S. \nClass 4: Moving Forward\nMonday\, May 1 \nExamine contemporary responses – or lack of responses – to antisemitism from within the Jewish community and outside of it. Discuss alternative models for Jewish identity formation beyond fighting antisemitism and summarize our learning together over the month. \nNo one will be turned away from any of our classes due to lack of funds. For more information\, please contact our Jewish Life Associate\, Molly.
