DESCRIPTION:The American writer and photographer\, Ruth Ellen Gruber\, has chronicled Jewish issues in Europe for two decades and explores how Europeans embrace the myth of the American Wild West.  A Guggenheim Fellow and the author of National Geographic Jewish Heritage Travel: A Guide to Eastern Europe\, she coined the term “Virtually Jewish” to describe how the so-called “Jewish space” in Europe is often filled by non-Jews.  In an illustrated talk\, Gruber will describe a colorful world of klezmer cafes\, European cowboys and other “real imaginary spaces” in today’s Europe. She will also read from her new book\, Letters from Europe (and Elsewhere)\, a collection of personal essays written over the past decade.
