SUMMARY:Staging Change: Race\, Justice\, and Judaism
DESCRIPTION:In 2025\, Ford’s Theatre commissioned and staged the world premiere of “The American Five\,” written by Sixth & I’er Chess Jakobs\, which was named the #1 show in the region. The play brings to life the relationship between Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. and four of his closest confidants in the days leading up to the March on Washington\, wrestling with questions of race\, power\, faith\, identity\, and solidarity\, including the often-overlooked stories of a Jewish member (Stanley Levison) and a queer member (Bayard Rustin) of Dr. King’s inner circle\, as well as Coretta Scott King and Clarence B. Jones.  \nIn this two part class\, co-led by Chess Jakobs and Rabbi Jenna\, experience live scenes from “The American Five\,” performed by actors\, and place them in conversation with Jewish wisdom\, text\, and tradition. Come to one class or both.  \nFebruary 17 Class\nTikkun olam\, the Jewish call to repair the world\, takes center stage in this text study and discussion. Where does this imperative actually come from? What does it demand of us in practice? And how can this powerful idea be both meaningful and\, at times\, misunderstood or misused?  \nMarch 11 Class\nExperience a scene from the play that delves into race\, whiteness\, and Jewish identity\, opening space for honest reflection and nuanced conversation.  \nNo one will be turned away from any of our classes due to lack of funds. For more information\, please contact our Jewish Life Associate\, Robyn.
