Lilith Salon: What’s in a Hyphen?
What Would YOU Do?
- This event has passed.
Whether through marriage, Ellis Island, or an unfortunate nickname, women have often had their names taken away. Some women replace their gender-revealing first names with gender-neutral initials when they’re writers or applying for a job.
A set of revealing first-person narratives in the winter issue of Lilith magazine—independent, Jewish & frankly feminist––explores what’s lost, reclaimed, or reimagined when we’re hyphenates (joining both of our parents’ surnames) and the influences of naming practices on our identities as women and Jews.
Using the magazine as a springboard, Lilith Editor in Chief Susan Weidman Schneider and Michelle Brafman, a writer and fiction teacher at GWU and the Johns Hopkins MA in Writing program, will facilitate an evening of name-dropping and namely, great conversation.

For women in their 20s and 30s. And for the record, we love all bubbes everywhere.
