What it Takes: How to Read Hebrew
- This event has passed.
This class meets virtually from Tuesdays, January 19 – April 6 from 6:30-8:30 pm.
In this introductory-level class, demystify the Hebrew alphabet as you learn the letters, vowels, and some words commonly found in Jewish life. Using the prayer book as context, this course introduces Hebrew literacy through focused study and participatory activities, games, and songs. Intended for those with little to no prior Hebrew reading ability. Students should plan to attend class regularly and spend 15-20 minutes daily on homework.
The class fee covers a materials kit (which will be shipped to students) and online component, but students are responsible for purchasing their own textbooks online (Aleph Isn’t Tough by Linda Motzkin, approx. $23). In order to create an intimate setting, the class is capped at 15 people.
Keren Yairi is a certified language instructor who teaches Hebrew literacy and language (liturgical, Biblical, and Modern Hebrew) and has taught ESOL and reading in the DC schools. She has also served as a consultant on education, language, and literacy projects for organizations such as the Smithsonian and the World Bank.
