Israel—the place, the idea—has played a significant role in Jewish history. We yearned for a return to our home—but when? And at what cost? Are we a people who privilege power and strength, and deal in the particulars of a plot of land? Or do we emphasize compassion and the Other, and tend toward the universal? Are these two ideals mutually exclusive when it comes to Israel?
