Mika Brzezinski

Prompted by her own experiences as co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Mika Brzezinski set out to talk with prominent women about their career paths and achieving value in the workplace. The result is a must-read book for all women, Knowing Your Value: Women, Money, and Getting What You’re Worth.

Weaving candid stories of her own career obstacles with the latest research on equal pay, women in the boardroom, and access to start-up capital, Brzezinski offers an essential look at the worth of women in the workplace. The book also includes personal anecdotes, observations, and advice from some of America’s most successful women and men—Joy Behar, Tina Brown, Nora Ephron, Arianna Huffington, Valerie Jarrett, Sheryl Sandberg, Donald Trump, and Jack Welch.

Ashley Judd

For the past seven years, actor and activist Ashley Judd has kept poignant journals of her travels into the world’s human-rights hot spots, where as a global ambassador for PSI/Youth AIDS, she waded into slums, brothels, and war-torn villages on four continents, advocating programs to improve the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people. As part of her journey to help these victims, Judd was forced to take a deep look at her own life, and at the damaging issues she had been wrestling with for years.

All That Is Bitter and Sweet is a highly personal and powerful memoir about change, hope, and human transformation. It tells the stories of the people Judd encountered and reveals her own personal demons—from depression to obsessive compulsion and codependency—unearthed as a result of her journeys. Judd recently received a Masters in Public Administration at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Watch the video trailer for the book. Book signing to follow.

Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish

Inspiring and heart-breaking, hopeful and horrifying, I Shall Not Hate is Dr. Abuelaish’s account of his extraordinary life and a portrayal of everyday life in Gaza. The Harvard-trained Palestinian doctor born and raised in the Gaza Strip has been crossing the lines that divide Israelis and Palestinians for most of his life–as a physician who treats patients on both sides of the line and as a humanitarian who sees the need for improved health and education for women as the way forward in the Middle East.

His daughters were killed by Israeli fire in 2009, during Israel’s incursion into the Gaza Strip. His response to this tragedy won him humanitarian awards around the world. Instead of seeking revenge, Abuelaish called for the people in the region to start talking to each other. His deepest hope is that his daughters will be “the last sacrifice on the road to peace between Palestinians and Israelis.”

This event is sponsored through the generosity of the Ellenberg-Abramowitz Family in commemoration of the yahrzeit of Israel Ellenberg.
