Anne-Marie Slaughter
- This event has passed.
When Slaughter accepted her dream job as the first female Director of Policy Planning at the U.S. State Department in 2009, she was confident she could juggle the demands of her position in D.C. with the responsibilities of her family life in New Jersey. She had a tremendously supportive boss, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, but parenting needs caused her to leave and return to an academic career that gave her more time for her family.
After that decision and the reactions to it, Slaughter began to question the feminist narrative she grew up with. She wrote an article for The Atlantic, “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All,” which sparked intense national debate.
Since that time, Slaughter has traveled the country, listened to questions, and grappled with answers that have helped her re-examine and break free of her long-standing assumptions about work, life, and family.
In Unfinished Business: Women, Men, Work, Family, Slaughter takes a hard look at our reflexive beliefs, the “half-truths” we tell ourselves that are holding women and men back. With practical individual solutions and a broad outline for change, the president and CEO of New America presents her vision for what true equality between men and women really means, and how we can get there.
