As President of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America for more than a decade and daughter of the late Governor Ann Richards, Cecile Richards has spent a lifetime fighting for social justice and women’s rights. After years of advocacy and progressive leadership, she shares her story in Make Trouble.

Richards grew up in ultra-conservative Texas, with activist parents who taught their kids to be troublemakers. As a child, Richards watched her mother transform from a housewife to the straight-talking governor of Texas.

After beginning her career as a labor organizer, Richards went on to start her own grassroots organizations and later served as Deputy Chief of Staff to House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. Along the way, she witnessed the pitfalls of public life that are unique to women—misogyny, sexism, fake news, and the threat of violence confronting those who challenge authority.

In Make Trouble, Richards—one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World—shines a light on the people and lessons that have gotten her through good times and bad, and encourages readers to take risks, make mistakes, and make trouble along the way.
