Deer Tick “Acoustic”

John McCauley and Deer Tick have long walked a tight-wire between total despair and fractured resilience, but the band’s latest album, Negativity, represents a leap forward for the Rhode Island-based group. Recorded with legendary producer Steve Berlin (The Blasters, Los Lobos, and McCauley’s side project, Diamond Rugs), the album – Deer Tick’s fifth full-length studio release – is the band’s most personal work thus far.
The follow-up to 20ll’s Divine Providence showcases a more detailed approach than has been found on some of the breakneck recordings of the band’s past. From the baroque pop of “The Dream’s In The Ditch” to the Memphis showstopper, “Trash,” Negativity bridges boozy punk, AM gold, bar band blues, and country soul into a profound mix of American rock ‘n’ roll.
While Deer Tick has been hailed for raucous rave-ups and substance-fueled fervor, Negativity places focus on the band’s nuanced and tender side. This is evident in the wrenching breakup ballad, “Hey Doll,” and the stunning tearjerker “In Our Time,” featuring singer/songwriter Vanessa Carlton.
Heartbreaking, fist-pumping, and ultimately life-affirming, Negativity stands as a high water mark for the group– a defining collection driven by faith in the power of redemption and transcendence.
