Canadian indie rock band Destroyer was founded by singer-songwriter Dan Bejar as a solo home-recording project in the mid-nineties. In 1996, Destroyer released its debut full length of stripped-down, lo-fi electric folk, We’ll Build Them a Golden Bridge. Since its first album, the band continued its sonic evolution with a string of albums featuring songs with a sculpted, fragile, ambient quality. The group’s most recent album, Kaputt, was critically acclaimed for its louder, more aggressive anthems that sprawl with shifting layers of guitar and piano.
Over the course of his career as Destroyer, Bejar has established himself and his band as one of the most unpredictable success stories in modern, popular music. As a songwriter, Bejar is in a class of his own. His lyrical style stands out for its cryptic poetry, which frequently vex and intrigue listeners. As a musician, he is like the court jester, poking fun at those who take themselves too seriously and skewering those who would celebrate commerce as art. Destroyer’s body of work consistently flouts convention in favor of musical leaps of faith.
