The Oscar-nominated star who captivated the world with his performance in Juno finally shares his truth in Pageboy.
“Can I kiss you?” Months before the premiere of Juno, Elliot Page was in a queer bar for the first time. The summer air hung heavy as he looked at her. And then a previously unfathomable experience happened, in front of everyone. Here he was on the precipice of discovering himself as a queer and a trans person, getting closer to his desires and himself, without the repression he’d carried for so long. But for Elliot, two steps forward had always come with one step back.
With Juno’s massive success, Elliot became one of the world’s most beloved actors. His dreams were coming true, but the pressure to perform suffocated him and playing the part of the glossy young starlet made his skin crawl, on and off set. The career that had been an escape out of his reality was suddenly a nightmare.
As he navigated criticism and abuse from powerful people in Hollywood and a society dead set on forcing him into a binary, Elliot often stayed silent, unsure of what to do. With behind-the-scenes details and interrogations on sex, love, trauma, and Hollywood, Pageboy is the story of a life pushed to the brink and what it means to untangle ourselves from the expectations of others as we step into who we truly are with defiance, strength, and joy.
Page will be in conversation with Thomas Page McBee, an award-winning journalist, writer, and producer who most recently worked on “The Umbrella Academy.” He is the author of the books Man Alive and Amateur.
This event will include real-time captions for the virtual audience. In-person attendees who want the captioned feed onsite should contact Amanda in advance.
