When Gabrielle Blair—founder of the blog Design Mom and a Mormon mother of six—published Ejaculate Responsibly: A Whole New Way to Think About Abortion in October 2022, the book became an instant New York Times bestseller and sparked a provocative new reframing of the abortion discussion in a post-Roe America: essentially, men should begin to share contraceptive responsibility and become active participants in conversations around birth control.
Based on Blair’s 2018 viral tweet positing that “men are 100% responsible for unwanted pregnancies,” the book examines the logic behind focusing on—and controlling—the bodies of women, who are fertile for 24 hours a month, instead of men, who are fertile 24 hours a day, every day. Blair walks readers through the basics of fertility (men are 50 times more fertile than women), the unfair burden placed on women to prevent pregnancy (90% of the birth control market is for women), the wrongheaded stigmas around birth control for men (condoms make sex less pleasurable, vasectomies are emasculating), and more.
Exploring power dynamics, presenting new research, and unearthing the sexism at the center of birth control, Ejaculate Responsibly offers a case for rectifying misplaced accountability on women’s bodies and a call for men to become active participants when it comes to preventing unwanted pregnancies. Blair will be conversation with Charlotte Clymer, a writer, communications consultant, LGBTQ activist, and author of the “Charlotte’s Web Thoughts” newsletter on Substack.
