Jake Bugg’s last album, 2016’s On My One, was a dizzyingly eclectic collection of styles and sounds, but for his most recent album, the singer wanted to make a complete record as opposed to a collection of songs.

His new album, Hearts that Strain, was recorded in Nashville with some of the best players in popular music, including The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and American Sound Studio’s legendary house band The Memphis Boys. Rather than an album to dip in and out of, Hearts that Strain is organic in its wholeness, an effortless assemblage that is more than just the sum of its parts.
