Billy, the bisexual narrator, tells the tragicomic story of his life as a “sexual suspect,” a phrase first used by Irving in his landmark novel of “terminal cases,” The World According to Garp. In One Person is a poignant tribute to Billy’s friends and lovers, as well as an intimate portrait of the solitariness of a bisexual man who is dedicated to making himself “worthwhile.”

Irving won the National Book Award in 1980 for The World According to Garp. He won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1999 for The Cider House Rules.
