Founded and led by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Stephin Merritt, the American indie-pop group has attracted a global following with their expert musicianship and captivating lyrics. While early recordings relied heavily on synthesized instrumentation, their best-known work, 1999’s 69 Love Songs, a three-volume concept, featured a wider range of sounds and instruments.
The Magnetic Fields followed this up with a “no-synth” trilogy: i (2004), Distortion (2008), and Realism (2010). Filmed over a period of 10 years, Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields debuted in film festivals around the world in 2010, earning multiple awards. Merritt and company are hitting the road once again supporting their newest album, Love at the Bottom of the Sea.
