Europe's Real Imaginary Spaces: Sauerkraut Cowboys and Klezmer Cafes

The American writer and photographer, Ruth Ellen Gruber, has chronicled Jewish issues in Europe for two decades and explores how Europeans embrace the myth of the American Wild West.  A Guggenheim Fellow and the author of National Geographic Jewish Heritage Travel: A Guide to Eastern Europe, she coined the term “Virtually Jewish” to describe how the so-called “Jewish space” in Europe is often filled by non-Jews.  In an illustrated talk, Gruber will describe a colorful world of klezmer cafes, European cowboys and other “real imaginary spaces” in today’s Europe. She will also read from her new book, Letters from Europe (and Elsewhere), a collection of personal essays written over the past decade.
