A River Wild: Young Adults Fighting the Upstream Battle Against Cancer

Despite popular opinion, young adults can and do get cancer. Those affected by cancer in their teens, twenties, and thirties are an often overlooked and orphaned generation who need support and community to live meaningfully through their battle with and survivorship from the disease.

The short film, A River Wild, tells the story of four young adults battling cancer who spent seven days kayaking the Colorado in order to prove that cancer, no matter how aggressive, dormant, or advanced, would never be stronger than they were. Join us in support of the young adult cancer awareness movement.

Following the film, special guests, Brad Ludden (Founder, First Descents), Jack Bouffard (Founder, i[2]y), and Tamika Felder (Founder, Tamika & Friends), will discuss and answer questions about the film and movement.

About the organizations:
First Descents is committed to curing young adults of the emotional effects of cancer and empowering them through adventure sports in a supportive environment.
i[2]y, the I’m Too Young For This! Cancer Foundation, is the nation’s leading grassroots advocate for the next generation of cancer survivors and their caregivers in their late teens, 20s, and 30s.
Tamika & Friends, founded by cervical cancer survivor Tamika Felder, raises awareness about cervical cancer and its link to HPV.

Not Your Bubbe’s Sisterhood: Kissing Jessica Stein

We’re reinventing the tried-and-true “girls night out” and transplanting it to a Sunday afternoon. Join us for a screening of Kissing Jessica Stein. The critically-acclaimed independent film tackles everything from sexuality and sexual orientation, to neuroses, to everyone’s favorite…Jewish mothers. Popcorn and other movie snacks will fuel our introspection. Facilitated discussion to follow.

For women in their 20s and 30s. And for the record, we love all bubbes everywhere.

Darius Goes West

In this multi-award-winning documentary, fifteen-year-old Darius Weems and eleven of his best friends set off across America with the goal of getting Weems’ wheelchair customized on MTV’s Pimp My Ride. The result is a rarely seen testament to the explosive idealism of today’s youth, as well as a vivid portrayal of adventure, of brotherhood, and of the character and strength it takes to shed light on an uncertain future.

Not only does Weems bravely face his inevitable fate with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), but through his unflinching humor and his extraordinary laugh, he sparks a revolution in the lives of everyone who crosses his courageous path. Part revolution, part revelation, this film proves to people of all ages how life, even when imperfect, is always worth the ride.

Join the Sixth & I Film Club for a screening of the film and hear from some of the crew members.

Join the Sixth & I Film Club for a special screening of this remarkable documentary, followed by a Q&A and conversation with director Laura Waters Hinson. Co-sponsored with Moishe House Silver Spring.
